Presentation

The Covelo Vegetable Garden, which forms part of the Covelo Environmental Education Centre (CE.ES), was Porto’s first educational vegetable garden, established in 1997 with the aim of promoting greater understanding of and respect for nature.

This vegetable garden is part of the “Horta Pedagógica” project under the Municipality’s Plano Integrado de Educação-Ação para a Sustentabilidade, aimed at pre-school and elementary school children in Porto. This project gives children the opportunity to experiment with and grow their own vegetables on a plot of farmland, using organic and sustainable practices. It also contributes to the adoption of healthier eating habits and to raise awareness of the role these ecosystems play in nature.

The Covelo Vegetable Garden features 22 growing plots, six plots for aromatic herbs and, since 2011, two raised plots, which provide access for people with reduced mobility. The garden also has two compost bins and seven vermicomposters, two greenhouses and a pond, which is also used for educational purposes.
